IPC and BAUER

The music magazines which Bauer owns are Empire, Kerrang, Mojo and Q.

Kerrang caters for a niche audience as it specific to rock metal music. Kerrang has a weekly circulation of 70,000, and a readership of approximately 542,000. The target audience for Kerrang is 15-24 year olds with a 60:40 male/female split. Q is more of a mainstream magazine as it caters for a wider audience and informs about more types of music. Empire magazine is the UK’s premier movie destination, providing an insight into cinema, both blockbusting and classic.

The way in which Kerrang tries to expand on their demographic readership and target thier specific audience is they repeat sales of their weekly magazine by giving readers an opportunity to voice their opinions. They also generate revenues by reverse billing readers for gig alerts and also driving ticket sales at its sister website, Aloud.com. Abother way in which they do this is by useing mobiles to create a mutually rewarding relationship for the magazine and its readers, generating revenues while providing a valuable service to readers.

Q magazine is the biggest monthly music title in the UK and across Europe with a circulation of 103,017. A striking and comprehensive redesign in October brought new editorial content, columnists, photographers and world exclusive interviews with U2, AC/DC and the Kings of Leon. This new content has complimented the rest of Q’s digital offering - such as qthemusic.com, Q’s music TV station and Q Radio.
The world’s biggest-selling film magazine
EMPIRE has posted sales up for the fifth consecutive period to 189,619.
Kerrang Remains the market-leading music weekly with a devoted audience of rock fans driving sales of 52,272 with a strong online, TV and Radio presence. Kerrang remains a flagship 360 brand recently hosting a sell-out 16 date tour of the UK.

These magazines use the process of synergy to sell their brands. Empire, Mojo, Q and Kerrang magazines also have websites, Radio shows and TV stations.

The music magazines that IPC Media owns are Guitar & Bass, NME and Uncut. There main sub-genre for NME and Uncut is Indie. Guitar & Bass magazine costs £3.95, NME costs £2.20 and Uncut costs £4.30

NME and Uncut cater for mainstream audiences; they provide general information about what is currently popular in music and film. Guitar & Bass caters more for a niche audience. This magazine consists of information about guitar equipment, coverage and reviews. Only people specifically interested in guitars would buy this magazine, if they wanted a magazine that informed the reader about general music, they would buy a magazine aimed at a more mainstream audience such as NME.

These magazines use the process of synergy to sell the brand. For example NME is not only a magazine, it also has a website, Radio show and TV programme.
