Some things!

Apart from theme and digetic music our video is complete. In order to submit it we had to cut it down from 10 minutes to 5 minutes. We had to be very strict when cutting to remove any unnecessary footage. We changed the script a little in that we focused on the roundabout creating a flash back scene, focusing on this rather than the swings was easier to film, us having to make minor adjustments in filming was easy. We think this created a better effect for our film giving better insight to the story. We may re write the script and Story board to show these changes if we have enough time. The audio was recorded afterwards to create a voiceover; this produced a better link between the audience and the film.

Here are a few pictures to show us setting up the house scene.

Rushes

overall we had around 25minutes of filming. After removing the mistakes and setting it up for becoming a video we had 10... thus resulting in us having to do alot of editing to remove uneeded scenes.in our filming, we have made many mistakes here is a short film displaying some examples.

after some audio recording to describe exactly whats happening we will upload some more examples.

Rushes

Here are a few of our mistakes these are called rushes and demonstrate how not to film. We will try and avoid making amateur mistakes when filming our final piece.

We have decided on a few changes to the film poster to make it more generic and professional. we have added star ratings and Critic's quotes. We have also beeen able to add actresses' names as we now have interest and decided to take these two on. (we 3were struggling to find actors to take part in this production for quite a while, setting the deadline closer and closer. We decided on the positioning of the actresses for the image, This is yet to be taken. We will take the photograph for this in one of our free periods. and i will upload a rough scan of the idea in the next post

Short Film Draft Poster

This is a draft of our Imagine Pageant poster. The photo used here is just there to show where the actual photo will be. We need to take the photo of the two actresses in our short film before we create the final poster. The use of red for the word pageant again symbolises the anorexia. This is the hidden meaning, the viewer probably wouldnt recognise that this is why that word was red however after watching the film it may become clear. We used a shadow behind one of the words as in the film the Character Anna is almost like a shadow to the girl. The words 'shes not alone' give a clue to the viewer that there is a twist to the short film. The photo on the poster will be in black and white, this will make the title stand out even more.

Film Posters

This poster is similar to how we have designed ours. Although our draft is different we have thought through our final design, we now just need to photograph the actors/actresses. The colours used in this poster are similar to the ideas we have for the colour scheme.

Screenplay

TREATMENT

IMAGINE PAGEANT
Short Film

Our short film is about a young girl suffering from anorexia nervosa.

Our short film is aimed at young people aged 17-25 of both genders. Although the majority of people who suffer from anorexia are girls, Imagine pageant is still aimed at males as this short film should raise awareness for such a taboo subject. We aim to target this particular audience as it is this age group that is most effected. We are aware that eating disorders can start at any age but we do not want younger girls to be exposed this, then worry over these issues as well as the dealing with the pressure from today’s society and media.

We plan to film Imagine Pageant on and around the streets of Parkgate. The main part will be filmed at a park and the end part will be filmed in Adam License’s house. There are three characters in out short film, one of which does not talk throughout the short film. This is Anna, an imaginary friend created by the girl in the short film; she encourages the anorexia and is a stereotypical example of a ‘friend’, as is the girl. There will be one other voice in the short film, but this person won’t be seen. The girl’s dad will be heard stomping up the stairs and shouting to her. The main character will be wearing a larger puffy coat to cover her figure. The other girl will be wearing red, this is as the colour red is often used to symbolise the eating disorder anorexia.

Camera Angles
When we shoot we will use an establishing shot at the beginning to show the audience where the short film is taking place. The characters will be filmed differently according to their role. As the girl is the main character we will use some close up shots. We will concentrate mainly on medium close ups and long shots, facing the girl head on. When the girl and Anna are walking towards the swings they wont be talking so we will film this from behind.

Mise en scene
To create a sense of diegesis and verisimilitude in our short film we must follow the rules of continuity and make sure it makes sense in terms of the time and place the story takes place. Production designs in terms of character types and make up have an extremely important role to play in mediating character types and roles to the audience. The girl will be wearing a large puffy coat; this is typical clothing of a person living in England on a cold night. It is essentially the costume that mediates most information about the girl. However the girl in red will be dressed diversely regardless of what the weather is like. The gesture in which the main girl acts will be casual and informal, as though she is just around friends. The only iconography used in our short film is the red colour of Anna’s clothing. The lighting used will be mainly natural light- high key lighting will be used to make the scenery appear natural or realistic, apart from when the girl is at her home. The lighting we will use then will be artificial, such as lights and lamps. Lighter and darker areas within the frame will help us to create the overall composition of each shot, thus guiding us our attention to certain objects (the box of food). We could also use low key lighting in the bedroom as this could connote a sense of sadness and secretiveness; the diegetic world she is in is cold. W are aware the overall colour on screen will change from outside to inside due to the white balance however this will just add to the verisimilitude.

Sound
We have a few ideas for background. We have not chosen a song for definite yet, we were thinking of using copyrighted music, however if we do this we will not be keeping to the generic conventions of a short film. Another idea we may choose to explore is to use a song produced and performed by Adams band ‘The Friday Night Dillusion’. This will make our background completely unique and will allow us to choose a song to fit the theme of our video properly. We will be using music to manipulate the audience’s emotions. Direct mode of address will be used in our short film as it is a monologue. This means that the diegetic effect will be broken as the girl will be directly addressing the audience, thereby acknowledging the presence of the audience and admitting the fact that they are watching a film. The mode of address that will be used in our short film is peer-to-peer this is because the girl is talking to the audience as though they are her friends. The girl’s accent, dialect and colloquialisms will show the audience that she is not from an upper class background; we will include regional dialect in the script of our short film so the audience become aware of the location of the girl.

Health and Safety Notes
When we begin to film we will make sure not to film near any busy roads or dangerous areas. We will take go out in a group/pairs to film to ensure that we are as safe as possible. We will also let somebody else know what time we expect to have finished filming.

Our plans for our storyboard are to draw up our ideas onto paper, we will do this during lesson time and in our spare time, we will then scan the storyboard and upload it into Windows movie maker. If necessary we will later recreate it in a Web2.0 format.

Short Films Defined

Dr Bevin Yeatman (1998)► of The University of Waikato, New Zealand states
that Short Films are usually defined in one of two ways:
1. The Professional Filmmakers Definition: professional filmmakers
define short films in terms of what they are not, i.e. feature length film.
2. The Film Student’s Definition: students (who produce most short
films), tend to define short films in terms of what they do, i.e. concisely
express and idea.

We have decided to use some music in our short film, we underestimate the importance of sound as music plays a vital role in films.
These are two possible song choices for out short film. We have chosen these as possibilities as they are relevant the the topic of our short film. If we use one of these songs it will be to manipulate the audience's emotions. However i think if we decide to use either of these songs, we wont be sticking to the typical generic conventions of a short film.

Possible Costume Ideas

I think it is important what the actors/actresses where in our short film as this has alot to do with the main theme of the project. I think for the main girl this puffy coat will do well in concealing het actual body shape, without making it
directly obvious that that is what we are trying to do. I found it here http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=puffy+coat&hl=en&safe=active&um=1&sa=2&start=0

I think something along he lines of these red clothes would be good for the friend who doesnt speak during the short film. I found it here http://is.gumtree.com/ad_image/live/big/265527482.jpg

About a Girl- Short Film

This is a Short Film called 'About a Girl'. It is this video in particular that has inspired our group. It is quite a dark monologue. The young girls speaks to the viewer informally. I think this would be seen as humourous but serious at the same time. It carrys a shocking twist and a message about teenage pregnancy and secrecey. This is where i first thought of the idea of using secrecy for our short film. Our group aspires to produce something like this is possible.

LOUIS THEROUX ‘MOST HATED FAMILY IN AMERICA’ DOCUMENTARY ANALYSIS

This documentary is a reportage/investigative reporting documentary. The mode of address for this documentary would mainly be adults interested in current affairs. The type of audience that this documentary is aimed at is quite clear as the topic of the documentary and language used throughout would not really be suitable for young people anyway. This extract is about a family in America who have extreme religious convictions. They believe that being homosexual is a sin and against the Gods commandments. In this section of the documentary they are about to crash a funeral and display their views to the mourners by shouting and holding signs. Louis Theroux is communicating to the audience he is present throughout the whole documentary and he also narrates. In this extract he interviews Shirley Phelps, a pastor’s daughter; however he does this in a more informal way, during he car journey, rather than just sitting down and asking rehearsed questions. I think that in interviewing his way, it enables him to find out more than he would if they had a formal sit down interview. The documentary is filmed on location in America. The camera follows the people around as they do what they would usually do, and Louis Theroux is with them throughout. In a way this could be seen as a behind the scenes documentary as we get to see how these people live there lives and as Louis Theroux gets involved. This clip starts with Louis Theroux driving for a second, and then cuts to him getting out of the car. This is because it isn’t necessary for the audience to witness the whole car journey, but we are aware he drove there. There is some calm music in he background, this connotes that it is a quiet neighbourhood. However when he arrives at the house, the music stops and when Shirley Phelps’ opinions are expressed it is relevant that the music was ironic. This documentary is not supporting the extreme views of the ‘Evil Angels’ it is supporting the fact that it is a free country and that homosexuality is not wrong. We see the signs that these people use during their protests. These represent he views of the ‘Evil Angels’ and have offensive phrases written across them. In showing the audience things like these, they don’t even have to narrate what they are to get the point across. The visuals are strong enough. This clip is very powerful even without any drastic music or props, this is done so that the audience can concentrate on the severe believes of the ‘Evil Angels’ rather than be distracted.

Semiotic Analysis Of Creep Music Video

MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS
Put simply a semiotic analysis can be defined as the study of signs and symbols. In order to fully understand a media text it helps to understand the semiotics, we can then decode the meanings and understand the information that has been encoded into the text. This links to Roland Barthes theory that all signs have two levels. The first is denotation, something’s literal or obvious meaning, the second, a possible or suggested meaning, values that come from the object within a given context.
Firstly I will analyse the music video ‘Creep’ by Radiohead. This video is aimed at a niche audience, as the band Radiohead is of an alternative/rock music genre. I think the mode of address for this particular video would be teenagers to young adults of both genders. The members of the band are all dressed relatively modern for when this video was produced, this shows that they also dress stereotypically for there age . The band members would be seen to be an ideal self for many people. I think it is aimed at both genders as the boys within the video can represent an ideal partner for girls, they are young and successful. They also appear moody and emotional which relates well to the song and also shows they have a sensitive side. However for boys they represent an ideal self. Many boys would aspire to live a life like the members of this band. They are successful, attractive and wealthy. As they are on a stage they also have an adoring audience in front of them. The idea of having many adoring fans is an appealing one.
There are many generic codes and conventions present in the media text I have chosen. Firstly the location for the video, it looks like a gig at an arena or club. We associate gigs and festivals with young people. The audience in the video are jumping and dancing around; we associate this with the younger generation.
The music video doesn’t have much of a narrative to it other than they are performing at some sort of gig/concert. Even though this isn’t a very imaginative video for the song, I think that it works well as the song alone is powerful. However it is the use of camera angle and lighting that make this video even better. The lighting in the video is very dark like it would be at a gig. There are coloured lights that flash around the room as they are performing, the lights are not too bright though, and are in keeping with the song. The colours used in the video are very dark and sombre; this represents the despondent theme of the song.
Mise-en-scene consists of three aspects, location, character and lighting and colour. The location of this music video is a gig. There is a main stage where the band is performing and each of the band members has an instrument. It is not necessary for the band members to have any musical instruments with them as in most music videos, the song is pre recorded and put over the video. So these are actually used as iconography to show that these are the band members. The gesture in which the band members act is stereotypical to a alternative rock band. This is how we would expect them to act at a gig. It is the temporal, spatial and geographic aspects that create a sense of diegisis and verisimilitude. The most common shot in this music video would be transitions. The cut is used a lot, we would expect this is a music video like this one as it is quite a simple video. The cut is by far the simplest and most frequently used transition, in which one shot is instantly replaced by the next. These are used because they are least noticeable. Overall the combined generic codes and conventions of this media text suit the audience it is aimed at and represents the song suitably.

Introduction to Unit G324: Advanced Portfolio - Video Task Shot List

This work relates to Assessment Objective 3.

In order to tell this story we will need to use editing. To begin we will use an establishing shot, this will be of college, as this is where the scene takes place. The establishing shot is there to establish the geographic location. After this we will use a master shot of Person A and Person B, this will show the two people walking towards each other, it is in this shot that the viewer will also see Person A drop their wallet/purse. We will use this master shot to introduce the characters to the viewer.
Then we will use a close up of the wallet/purse. We will then cut to a shot of Person B noticing the wallet/purse and the viewer will see thier reaction to the dropped object, and then cut to a shot of a close up of the wallet/purse again. By doing this, it makes it clear to the viewer that Person B has seen the wallet/purse and is contemplating picking it up, however it is still unclear as to whether they will return it or not.
We will then use an insert shot to see a hand hesitate, then pick the wallet/purse up. The camera will follow up Person B's arm, it will then slowly zoom out to a medium close up of Person A and Person B talking. We see a medium shot of person B holdin out the wallet to Person A. When Person B returns the wallet/purse back to Person A the viewer will be able to see Person A's reaction and them thanking Person B. Then a close up shot of Person A's reaction.

Other part of the evalutation below

For Question 7- Audio recording

Since starting to produce my college magazine my knowledge of Photoshop has expanded so much. I started off not really knowing anything about it other than how to edit a photo. And now I know so much more. Through using Photoshop all the time, I learnt some things by accident! But it has all helped along the way to producing STAGED. When I first started my college magazine I researched other college magazines first. I didn’t realise how much went into making a magazine cover until I came to do it myself. I did enjoy it though. When I came to creating the final versions of my college magazine and music magazine I realised just how essential the planning and drafting of my work was. It helped so much as I basically knew what I was doing and how it would look. I just had to put it together with my own photos and text

AS MEDIA STUDIES: G321: FOUNDATION PORTFOLIO IN MEDIA: EVALUATION

Part of my media coursework to create a music magazine cover, double page spread and contents was to analyse existing music magazines. By doing this I was able to form an idea of the basic elements of a music magazine and start to form my own idea. I have chosen to take the generic conventions of other magazines so that it has a sense of verisimilitude and looks appealing and real. If you look at the magazine cover below and my front cover you can see the generic conventions I have used. Like all magazines my magazine has a house style which limits it to four colours and three different fonts throughout. I have taken the photo for my front cover using ideas for poses, colours, style of clothes and props from other magazine cover photos and musicians I have researched. For the layout of text I have researched double page spreads and article layout. I will type the interview up into columns. However, as well as conforming to the traditional forms and conventions of a media product I have also challenged this by making a magazine of a slightly different size to the average and producing a more niche product specific to indie pop/alternative music. I have of course included the general conventions of a music magazine such as the masthead, central image, sell lines, text and limited colour. My magazine also has the barcode date and price as all magazines do, usually positioned at the bottom right-hand corner of a magazine.

When created the masthead for my magazine I decided on the word ‘staged’. I chose this as it has connotations musicians playing at festivals and gigs (on the stage). In positioning my masthead on the magazine I made sure to stick to the usual conventions, placing it at the top left of the magazine. I did this as it is the first thing the audience will see and as it is the largest text on the magazine cover it should stand out to the reader. The font of the masthead “STAGED” comes across as slightly messy and stamped. This corresponds well with the name of the magazine associating the title with the intended audience, those who are interested in festivals and indie pop/alternative music.

A basic plain colour background is consistent throughout my magazine as it enables the magazine to look professional and more writing can be produced it also emphasis’s the main photograph. I kept to a basic for my colour scheme throughout using black as the dominant colour with some lighter colours such as white and grey, and a bright colour red.

Anchorage text is additional information designed to “anchor” the text to one specific reason, for example anchorage text relating to the cover image. I learnt that in the media industry if a caption is added to an image the image is supposed to be interpreted in a way related to the caption. In my main photograph on the cover Rob looks quite serious and possible stressed or tired. My caption with this reads “SEBASTIAN KING takes it to daring new levels”. Had a put a more light hearted caption, the image would not suit as well. A more cheery caption would suit the photo on the right. He looks relatively serious here. When taking these photos I told rob basic ideas of what I wanted him to do and he improvised also. I want the reader to know this is for older age groups rather then children. Stuart Hall's theory that the producer encodes meaning into the media product, they then have a dominant or preferred reading to the particular piece of text. The dominant reading is when the audience have accepted the meaning whereas the preferred reading is another reading that they prefer to adopt. This relates to what I have done.

Generally the main image on the cover of a music magazine is centred and displayed in colour, with the subject(s) using a direct mode of address. Often this means the person/people are making eye contact with the audience, which in effect attracts them to at least pick up and browse through the magazine, it also creates a personal relationship with the magazine and the reader. The person on the cover is also usually well known. My main image photograph has a direct mode of address; Rob is making eye contact with the camera. One way in which my music magazine cover differs slightly from a real one is that firstly I have decided to use a greyscale image. This does occur occasionally in music magazines although it is not the norm. I think it makes the cover look more effective and professional. I also like this photo. Another way in which my cover differs is that the man on the front is not a really famous musician; he is quite new on the scene.

For my contents page I have followed the basic layout of a Kerrang contents but using my magazine house style and colours. I think it is clear my cover and contents page are from the same music magazine as they share the same colour scheme and fonts used; this is consistent between the two. I have integrated text and image on the contents page. The text is arranged in one set column on the right hand side and six equally sixed small square pictures in two rows towards the bottom on the page. I have numbered these, using the same font and colour as the masthead, but a lot smaller if course. A lot of the pictures on my contents page were live photos taken at Leeds festival; however for the others I used different lighting and took them from high and low angles, to see which looked most effective to the style of band this person was supposed to be in.

My double page spread relates to the person on the cover, it is an interview with ‘Sebastian King’. It made sense to do my double page spread on my cover model as it is them who would be attracting the customers to the magazine. The interview consists of a mixture of musical questions, family questions and then a few random questions. I included these questions unrelated to music, such as ‘What would you spend your last £20 on?’ I did this to break up the interview and add some humour to the article. This also gives the reader more of an insight into the musicians life; making them feel as though they know them a little better. The colour scheme is quite plain on the double page spread; however I think this works as the picture is quite a strong image I included pull quotes to draw the reader to the article, these are in bright blue. The words Sebastian King are in the same font as the masthead but again smaller and at a slight angle. I included three smaller images in the bottom left corner of the page. I think this looks quite good as it breaks up the page and adds some more interest to it.

STAGED represents a particular social group of males and females interested in indie/alternative music. My magazine would most likely appeal ore to the younger generation, age 16-25. The image of rob on the cover appeals to both males and females as it could be seen as an ideal self or an ideal partner. In my main image rob is giving a direct mode of address to catch the readers eye and draw them in. keeping to a simple colour scheme of black white grey and red means fits well with the genre of the magazine. Just by looking at the cover you can tell this isn’t a heavy metal magazine or a rap magazine. I think the house style works well in getting the genre of magazine across to the audience without them having to buy it to find out. I chose to represent this particular social group as I enjoy this kind of music so know more about it than heavy metal or rap. Through research I also found out this type of music is growing in popularity.

The type of company that might make and distribute my magazine would be a conglomerate. I have chosen this as my magazine is mainly mainstream and the Indie Genre appeals to people on a large scale. The context within it is quite broad, introducing new bands and reviewing albums and festivals. It appeals to those interested in new music rather than older. Bauer media and IPC media are two magazine institutions that already publish well known magazines. Bauer media publishes and distributes, 'Q' magazine, 'Kerrang' and 'Mojo' and IPC media distributes 'NME' magazine. Seeing as my main focus and analyses was on NME magazine I think IPC media would be appropriate for distributing STAGED as it has a similar atmosphere and genre to the magazine it already distributes. The circulation would be large scale and would be distributed to people all around the U.K to promote my magazine to the public I will use a range of media texts to advertise it. My main source of advertisement would be television, this is because figures have shown that over 90% of the population watch T.V. meaning if I advertise STAGED on T.V many people will become aware of the magazine. The other place I will advertise STAGED would be on the internet, on social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. I think this would be a very effective method of advertising as figures from the national cohort study show that over 92% of teens aged 16-19 use the internet on a regular basis. This means that I can appeal to more than half of my target audience. This magazine will be accessible in shops or over the internet, as the magazine expands readers will also be able to subscribe to STAGED. The more people know about my product, the more people will be influenced to buy it.

The audience for my media product would mainly consist of 16-25 year olds of both genders. STAGED is aimed at people who like music of the genre indie. I will also attempt to attract those who don’t particularly like this type of music. I have decided to appeal to both genders so that I have a broader range of readership.

During my practical work I have used a range of technologies and applications, such as Photoshop and Quark X press. From using the Photoshop application I have learnt how to import a picture into it and edit the colour settings on it. I have learnt how to produce text and change the font, size and colour of it. I now know how to can apply drop shadows to my work and also cut backgrounds out from photos. I have also learnt about the different layers, and how all of them combined make the final product. I have also used Quark Xpress I have learnt some of the basic features of this. I have learnt how to create picture and text boxes, and how to fill boxes with jabber to show where text will go. I have learnt how to save this then open it up in Photoshop to continue making the magazine. I am not as confident with this as Photoshop however I think in time as I continue to use it more I shall improve. I prefer using Photoshop to Quark Express I have learnt how to create a blog and how to post text, photos, and work onto it. Through the process of constructing this product I have learnt how much work goes into making a magazine.
